The nature in your collection is beautiful. You have a talent for understanding it as being equitant, vast and silent. The “Beach of Bolshoy Fontan” piece is marvelous in my eyes. This wonder is left only on your canvas. The wonder of freshness has gone. The only pearl left of Odessa is the pearl of painting.

The portrait of the painter Matusevich is brilliant. It is a masterpiece. You feel the influence of his personality. At least two conditions had to be fulfilled to create this portrait: L. Mezheritski’s enormous artistic talent and the fact that he painted his friend. You feel the presence of this person, it seems that he is standing near you, thinking, watching and listening.

No, I am not going to draw with words a painting of my countrymen!... But on the other hand…with only one word, the most definite would be “genuine”. Genuine art by artists who did not “sell their souls to the devil”, as per the definition of the old teacher from “Grekovka” [Odessa Grekov Art Akademy – Note of the Editor].
