The website art-leon.info is a non-commercial online resource developed in connection with a catalogue raisonné currently in preparation. It is designed as a guide through the work of the painter Leonid Mezheritski (1930–2007). The site does not claim completeness, nor does it offer a definitive interpretation of the artist’s œuvre.
A selection of works, organised by genres, together with a biographical overview and related materials - critical essays, reviews, and press publications - provides an illustrated framework for engaging with Mezheritski’s life and artistic production.
For art-historical research and academic projects at the Master’s and doctoral levels, the newly published information regarding the processing of the artist’s estate is of particular relevance. Inquiries concerning project-based access to the complete estate are expressly welcome.
The estate is held in Berlin and comprises more than 700 items, including paintings, miniatures and studies from all periods of Mezheritski’s artistic path (Odesa, Galilee, Berlin), as well as archival materials such as documents, photographs, and correspondence. All works have been systematically inventoried and professionally photographed in accordance with archival standards, including the use of colour and grayscale reference charts.
Within international reception, Mezheritski’s work has been recognised, among others, by the artist and philosopher Adrian Piper, who observes:
“Mezheritski’s bold, focused activity and confident, gestural handling of paint always verged on abstraction. Only his mastery of form restrained him.”
(Adrian Piper, “Artist’s Favourites”, Spike Art Magazine, no. 31, 2012, p. 25).
The scope and integrity of the preserved estate provide a substantial foundation for further scholarly research.
As supplementary information, in the menu on the right you can find links to external sources representing the artist.
